for general news about MS. for general windows news and support. Apologies if this is a redundant question, but google searches, sidebar, and searching this sub hasn't yielded anything helpful yet. I'm trying to export my notebooks to local storage to free up space on OneDrive.

From both my desktop OneNote and the online version, choosing file share or file move only give me the option to save an additional copy of the notebook to OneDrive. Am I missing something, or am I being steamrolled into purchasing additional storage?
Edit: It's a OneDrive account through a university email, if that makes a difference. Onenote 2016 for Mac doesn't support making local backups/exports of your notebooks. That seems to be one of the exclusive features of the Windows version.
One way that should work for you is going online to your OneDrive account. Look in your OneDrive's 'Documents' folder. That's where OneNote 2016 stores notebooks.
From there download each notebook that you want and make a local backup. Should you need to restore them in the future, then you can upload those notebooks back into your OneDrive's 'Documents' folder. I'd agree to a point. Really they're saying that they're not investing in developing or supporting that feature for the Mac. They're also not investing in that feature on the PC. It's only there because it was needed in 2001 when the PC version was written.
If they wrote the PC version today, I guarantee that it would not support Network Drives and local files. The Microsoft of today is all about Office 365, Azure and the Cloud. The competition is all cloud focused too. Evernote doesn't support local drives. Google Keep, Dropbox Paper. That's where I see them putting all of their effort. That said, I'm not Microsoft (or an employee) so I don't speak for them.
